Physical Education and Health
Philosophy:
Our philosophy in PE 1 is to have all students leave physical education classes with a positive attitude and the know how to be physically active for a lifetime.
Objectives:
The physical education environment will help students to develop a sense of teamwork, goal setting and accomplishment. In addition, the program will provide students an opportunity to participate in activities designed to develop and maintain health related fitness. Finally, the physical education program will help students to learn physical skills that will allow them to participate in and enjoy physical activity for a lifetime.
HEALTH:
Health will be taught 2 days per week. Each student will be issued a book. We will cover the areas of Nutrition, Sexuality, and Drugs, Alcohol, and Tobacco. There is one major project per unit, some group work, and usually daily assignments. I try to give you class time to do your daily work, but this is not always guaranteed. All daily assignments are due the next health class. Make up work for health is due 2 school days after the absence, not just health days. Failure to turn in assignments will result in no points for that assignment.
Uniform and Dressing Requirement:
Students are required to dress out on PE days. No cutoffs, boxer shorts, or jean shorts will be accepted. Be sure shorts are of acceptable length for a coed class. T- shirts must be school appropriate. Tank tops, midriff shirts, or any shirt that shows excessive body parts are not allowed. Finally, tennis type shoes are mandatory. They need to be non-marking and clean. They do not need to be brand new shoes. Sweats, sweatshirts, are permitted and recommended on cold days. Any student violating the dress code will receive a 30 min. detention and a non-suit for that day.
1st offense: The student will be required to walk the gym the entire period. They will lose their 10 daily points for the non-suit day. Detention will be assigned.
2nd offense: Same as above, except students will lose 20 points. Parents will also be notified of the 2 non-suit days. Detention will be assigned.
3rd offense: Parent is notified and discipline notice is sent home. Student is still required to walk the gym, and will lose 40 points. Detention will be assigned.
4th offense: Students grade will drop 1 letter grade each time, and a detention will be served each time after this.
Showers and towels:
Showers are available for use. They are not required but strongly suggested. Towels are not always provided.
Locks and Lockers:
Locks and lockers are provided and should be used. Personal items found not locked in lockers during class will result in extra work. If you lose your lock, it will cost you $8 to replace.
Attendance and Participation:
Both attendance and participation is required. You will receive daily points for both. Also, a detention will be assigned for not dressing out. A missed day can be made up, however, a non-suit day cannot.
Make up work:
Make up work is your responsibility. A 5 minute run per day missed other than for school related activities for PE days, and it must be made up 2 days after return to school. Make up work for health must be made up within 2 days upon return to school.
Excuses:
Doctors notes are required for any illness or injury that requires a student to sit out for more than one day. A parents note will be taken into consideration. Please remember that this is a participation class. Students sitting out will be required to do a written assignment to gain their points.
Classroom Expectations:
Students must bring all needed supplies each day. P.E. clothes must also be brought on P.E. days. Students will not be allowed to go to their lockers for anything. Problems with this will be dealt with accordingly.
Student Behavior and Responsibilities:
1. Be in your seat or in the locker room when bell rings.
2. You must do your own work. If you choose to copy, or let someone copy
your work, you will receive a 0 for that assignment.
3. You are not allowed to use the rest room during class. Take care of this
on your own time.
4. No use of profanity. If it is directed at the teacher or another student, a
discipline notice will be issued.
5. No candy or pop in the gym or health class.
6. No horseplay in the gym or locker room.
7. Take care of and use the equipment properly. Deliberately breaking
something will result in you paying for it and discipline.
8. Treat each other with respect.
9. Keep locker room and gym clean.
10. Keep yourself busy.
The school rules listed in the school discipline policy are in effect in my class and the consequences that go with them.
Evaluation process and grading scale:
Any non-suit days will result in the consequences stated in the uniform and dressing requirements section. This is for the entire semester, not just the 9 weeks. Please be responsible and dress out on a daily basis.
Grading Scale:
90 - 100 A
80 - 89 B
70 - 79 C
60 - 69 D
59 - 0 F
Your final grade will be determined by:
a. 9 weeks grades: these will be figured, final grade is cumulative.
b. a final exam
Good luck and have a great school year.
GO INDIANS!!!!!
